A piece of writing doesn’t need a dramatic event to create movement. Sometimes a person pours a cup of tea, folds a shirt, cuts an apple, or waits for someone to speak, and by the end of that small act, something has changed.
In this two-hour generative craft class, we’ll explore how writers create movement through small, precise shifts rather than big plot turns or dramatic revelations. We’ll look at the relationship between action, pressure, and change, and how an ordinary act can reveal tension, alter a relationship, shift power, or allow a character or reader to understand something differently.
Through close reading, craft discussion, and generative exercises, we’ll practice building scenes around ordinary actions and finding the moment when something subtly changes. We’ll also look at how gesture, objects, dialogue, repetition, and physical behavior can carry that change without relying on explanation.
The class is open to fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry writers at all levels.
