Class Description

A true story is raw material, not a finished product. This class covers the craft and responsibility of turning real events into compelling fiction, film, and television — from finding a story’s dramatic spine to adaptation techniques and the legal and ethical lines every writer of true stories must navigate. I teach it with examples from my own work across all three media, including the novel Chasing Shadows, the network TV movies Badge of Betrayal and Murder or Memory?, and the award-winning PBS documentary Primal Twang: The Legacy of the Guitar. It’s practical and interactive, and it works for all levels.
