Each class is offered as an individual course, you do not have to sign up for all of them.
This class is a series of seven introductory lessons that each focuses on a basic element of literary fiction. We’ll give special attention to writing complex characters, plotting and pacing narratives, scene writing, and setting an evocative mood. Participants will emerge from the class with actionable ways to apply their new knowledge and skills to longer forms like the novel. Instead of taking each narrative element in isolation, students will develop an understanding of the relationships between them through the analysis of excerpts and brief writing prompts. I believe this helps writers—even those with some experience—to better assess their own work from a craft perspective. I see this course as a prerequisite to any workshop-based course. It will teach participants to think and speak like a writer.
