Class Description

The best coming-of-age stories are ones that take us along for the ride and fight against themes like betrayal, self-identity, sexuality, class structure, racism, injustice, and violence. Many of us have our own stories like this and these stories help us reflect, heal, and learn about ourselves and others. In this four week long course, we will examine both classic and modern coming-of-age stories through an analytical and holistic perspective. We will learn how to construct and write our own coming-of-age stories that can be developed into stories, poems, or essays. This course will help you add to your writing portfolio, explore and reflect on your own life, and allow you to learn to read as a writer.

Week Breakdown:
Week 1: Defining coming-of-age stories & Discussing the elements of a coming-of-age story
Week 2: Reading “Educated” by Tara Westover
Week 3: Developing coming-of-age stories
Week 4: Writer’s Workshop with peers
