Group Description

Please Note: Though this class is offered as part of the Novel Writing Certificate Program, there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll.

Characters and characterization make or break a novel, and as a writer, you must know not only how to construct a person from the ground up, but also how to skillfully relate that character to your readers through action and thought. This means that complicated backstories are not the be-all-end-all to characters. We need to understand the personalities within our writing. This process can be tricky, but it is a lot of fun. Once you have it down, you’ll never forget it.

This course will focus on three main areas of study:

  • Character Theory
  • Psychology
  • Subtext

By the time you finish this course, you will not only have fully formed characters that fit your story and style, you’ll know how to use them, too.

Note: There will be no class on March 30 (Easter Weekend) or April 6 (San Diego Writers Festival).
