Hispanic & Latinx-Owned Local Businesses

October 9, 2022

San Diego is ripe with rich food from all people groups and traditions. During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we at SDWI want to place a spotlight on some particularly fantastic restaurants owned by Hispanic & Latinx individuals and families. From fresh Peruvian delicacies to delicious empanadas to Caribbean treats, each of these businesses’ menus are full to bursting with food you’re going to want to try as soon as possible. Check out the list and links below!

The Latin Chef

2820 Historic Decatur Rd Ste 139, San Diego, CA 92106

This local Liberty Station booth is owned and operated by Tony Kanashiro, bringing the tastes of Peru he grew up with to our area. The booth is located inside of the Liberty Station Public Market. Check out The Latin Chef’s Instagram for some mouth-watering pictures!

Paraná Empanadas Argentinas

2820 Historic Decatur Rd #139, San Diego, CA 92106

“The family project started in the city of San Diego in 2014, and now it has grown into their shops at Liberty Public Market and Westfield UTC, as well as being part of a number of farmers markets around the city. The goal is to make you feel in Argentina every time you take a bite of an empanada with chimichurri sauce, a dulce de leche alfajor, or a yerba mate drink. Paraná Empanadas is the fusion of our roots, inserted in our present and projected in the future in a universal way.”

Tropical Star

6163 Balboa Ave, San Diego, CA 92111

“Capture the taste of the Caribbean at Tropical Star. Our menu brings you authentic recipes from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Central and South America. We use only the finest ingredients and prepare each meal with love. Many of the special food and seasonings we use are imported from the Caribbean, Central and South America. It is our special preparation and cooking style that creates the distinctive taste we know you’ll enjoy. Because many of our ingredients are unavailable elsewhere, we offer them to you in our specialty market for your own ethnic creations at home. Hay Bendito!!”
